For a moment Korosu stood there with the cape wrapped around him and his head poking out.
Sloshing around in the rapidly growing bloodstream, he threw the cape down. It swirled about before getting sucked under and disappearing.
The demon rolled his eyes at the man going for a swim before attempting to put his thoughts into focus.
A celebration...
The bloody ocean began to wane, and from it the contents of a home began to rise. Their surroundings closed in on them and suddenly they were standing in an old stone house, with no blood in sight.
In the low candelight of the kitchen you could see the home's meager table and chairs, and a woman excitedly hugging a man.
Korosu looked away, pretending to be interested in the wall instead of the couple.
"This is...I can't believe it," The man was saying, pulling away from the woman to smile at her. Despite the fact that his face and build were identical to Korosu, the man was completely different. "You're certain?" He asked, to which the woman nodded. They hugged again and Korosu walked away from them into a different part of the house with a dramatic, disgusted "UUUUGGHHHHcchhh" sort of noise.

As the blood began to drain, swimming spirit looked like a fish that got thrown onto land, flopping about. After composing himself, he came to listen in on the scene play, before bursting out in a fit of laughs. His reaction was undeniably hilarious. How old was this demon, exactly?
Crossing his arms and watching the lovely couple share their mushy feelings with each other, the nosy idiot had to wonder about it.
"Hey, hey! Pal, hold up!"
Following the demon 'outside' the makeshift dream home, he left the door open for a view at the adjacent two.
"Was that your ladyfriend-- I mean, wife? She's a beauty! What's with the overexaggerating, bud?" |
"Hey! Need a hand?"

As Korosu was walking out, he cringed with annoyance at Maware's laughing behind him.
Outside was a dark village quieting down as everyone was heading inside for the night. It was a common place for Korosu's dreams.
He sat down on a worn wooden bench and looked up, stars appearing as he thought of them, and ignored Maware's questions.

Noticing he had no intentions of returning, the soldier moved back to close the door, respectfully bowing as he did so. His hand stayed on the door handle for a moment in contemplation. After nodding to himself, he noisily jogged over to join his dreaming companion and took a seat.
The peaceful village was a sight to behold, captured by the fog of memories over time. Craning his head upwards, he joined the other in staring out into the imitation of the night sky.
“What a clear view.”
He sighed, relaxing into the seat. He left Korosu be for the moment, relishing in the quiet.
He may have been an idiot, but he was one with enough heart as to care.

Sitting in silence for a while, Korosu gave the man a few reluctant side-eyed glances before speaking.
"Anwen." He said quietly, "Her name was Anwen. She was just telling her husband that she was pregnant."
The demon looked down, picking at a seam on his coat.
"It's one of the few memories of his that still remain with me."

Line of sight lowered from the glimpse of stars back to their feet. "Anwen." Although the name felt alien to the tongue, he repeated it as to commit it to his vocabulary. He allowed the quiet to continue for a moment more, deciding to think a bit about the implications of what he had said. An idiot should always try and think the important things through. "News like that hasta be one of the most important and happiest things a guy can hear, second to the first cry of'a baby born." He gave a glance at the other, mildly speaking from experience. Deputy had been there for nearly all the births of his young clanmates. "What's so cringe-worthy about it that you'd walk away?" |

Korosu scoffed a little at his own demonic predictability with this: "Just...All the love." He said, adding air quotes around the "L" word.
"All the excitement. Over what? Two more humans in the world? Whoop-dee-fucking-doo.
"At that time kids were hardly living past the age of a month anyways." He added, a bit of amusement in his voice.
The demon looked over at Maware with legitimate curiousity.
"What do you see in them? They're just smaller, dumber versions of fully developed humans."

Taken by surprise, he raised his hand to chin in thought. Not once in his life- or afterlife- did he think he'd be the one having to explain such a significant concept to a demon. Thankfully, he DID have the foresight to think that someone else like a child would ask him. "How ya see the kiddos are definitely one standpoint. They don't look like much-- and I swear, pal, there's some ugly babies in the world." He chuckled to himself before ultimately sighing, resting his arms against his knees as he leaned forward. "Now, for me, I ain't speaking from direct experience. But I think they're a way of being and staying remembered. To raise them how I've been taught, continue my values, transfer knowledge; it's my whole way of life being passed to the next generation. They've got the potential to grow into anything. To grow up with compassion and'ta teach that love and care. I already thought-- think of the clan's children as my own. The younger ones aren't dumb; they're just inexperienced.
But everyone's different! Some people like the responsibility of taking care of munchkins; others think of 'em as a purpose of living, or they find gratification in shaping a new life." Not trying to ramble any further, he straightened himself up and gazed into the quiet village.
For a dolt, his heart was in the right place where his mind wasn't. He almost respected the demon, taking his question seriously enough to answer in turn.
"And then there's feeling responsible for fooling around on a hot summer night and owning up to it."
Well, he took it mostly seriously. |

At that, a genuine smile spread across the demon's face and he laughed.
"You got me there."
Korosu watched some of the blurry shapes moving in a house's window before asking, "How did it feel to die?"

"Well..."
He began to speak, but trailed off, as though he were changing the way he wanted to answer the question. The beginnings of a frown crept upon Maware's features, although he attempted to remain as stoic as the conversation called for.
"It felt warm. At the very end, it was as though the sun itself came to greet me. When I thought that I'd be alone in death, it felt as though the entire clan came with the goddess to greet me. But damn, ya made it hurt like a bitch all the way until they showed up."
Lowering his voice, he posed a question of his own.
"What happened after I... How's Yomi?"

For now." The demon grinned casually at the warrior before everything suddenly deteriorated.
Korosu woke, his blank stare at the ceiling slowly turning into a confused frown.
